In particular, bike excursions, e-scooter excursions and some of the golf excursions are organized by TUI Cruises itself and carried out for you on site. All other shore excursions offered are mediated by TUI Cruises. The implementation, responsibility and liability for organized excursions lies solely in the hands of the respective local organizer, who is also your contractual partner. All shore excursions offered have an organizer number, which you can find online here for further information on the selected local organizer. TUI Cruises regularly checks the local organizers in the ports of call.

Where can I find an overview of the shore excursions?

An initial selection of shore excursions can be found under each cruise itinerary on the website. Select a route in the travel section and view the details. There you will also get a preview of the varied shore excursion program. The shore excursions are viewable and bookable online via your personal access to the My Cruise Account or in the Mein Schiff® app. There you will also find the exact date when booking opens. More information can be found here.

Question 3

Can I book shore excursions before the start of the cruise?

Yes, it is possible and recommended to book shore excursions before the start of the cruise, as the number of participants is limited for some excursions. Discover the wide range of our shore excursions and conveniently secure your favorites online. You can find the respective booking deadlines in your My Cruise account. Subject to availability, many shore excursions can also be booked at short notice up until the departure of the bus. It’s that simple:  Detailed information, as well as the shore excursion program for your trip and the date when reservations open, can be found in My Cruises. There, you can log in using your booking number and always see the current availability. Simply select individual categories and excursions, tick the checkboxes, confirm the excursion provider, and finalize the reservation. You can access the latest excursion details at any time and view your personal itinerary with the excursions you have already booked in the Mein Schiff® app or on your cabin TV.

Where can I book my shore excursions on board?

Book your shore excursions with our excursion experts in the Excursion Lounge during the opening hours published in the daily program, or at any time free of charge via the Meine Reisen onboard portal and the Mein Schiff app. The Excursion Lounge is located on Deck 4.

Question 5

How does booking and payment of excursions work?

Accepted Answer

For arranged shore excursions, we process payment on behalf of and for the account of the local excursion operator conveniently via your onboard account. The listed prices include transport services, entrance fees, and meals as stated in the service description. Additional costs, such as possible photo/video fees, are not included unless expressly stated. Both the local operators and TUI Cruises reserve the right to change published prices due to unforeseen reasons, such as significant price changes by service providers or currency fluctuations.

Question 6

My desired excursion is fully booked. Are there any additional places available?

All places made available by the local excursion organizer will be made available to you via the My Cruise account and the Mein Schiff ® app. Therefore, for excursions with a limited number of participants, the available places may be exhausted before the start of the trip. Of course, we always try to ensure that there are sufficient places available in consultation with the local organizer. If the local excursion organizer makes further places available to us, these are automatically recorded in the system and are available for reservation. We will not be notified of this. For some excursions, it is unfortunately not possible to increase the contingent due to logistical circumstances or local restrictions. We also offer you all available spots for our own guided bicycle, e-bike, and e-scooter excursions via the My Cruise account and the Mein Schiff® app. Please contact our shore excursion team on board to book shore excursions at short notice.

Question 7

How long can I cancel my booked shore excursion free of charge?

Accepted Answer

Changes or cancellations of reserved shore excursions are only possible until the cancellation deadline; after that, the full excursion price will be charged.  You can also find the applicable cancellation deadlines for each excursion in the My Trips portal or in the Mein Schiff® app. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, the local operator or TUI Cruises is entitled to cancel an excursion and refund the excursion price. In this case, you will be informed as early as possible and, if applicable, offered alternative excursions. Additionally, individual participants may be excluded from an excursion if their behavior could compromise the safety and well-being of the group.

Question 8

Participation of children / teenagers and discounts

Please note that children may only take part in shore excursions when accompanied by an adult supervisor. Teenagers aged 16 and over may participate in most excursions unaccompanied with parental consent. A consent form for excursion participation for children and adolescents under 18 can be obtained at reception. Provided the excursion does not require a minimum age, children under 4 years of age usually travel free of charge, as they are not entitled to their own seat*. Children between 4 and 14 years of age generally pay a reduced price on most excursions. *Exceptions apply to trips in Norway (children under 4 years) and Iceland (children under 3 years). Toddlers can also participate free of charge in these cases, but due to legal requirements, they must be seated in a child seat appropriate to their size and weight. As these can only be provided in limited numbers by the excursion operators, you are asked to bring a suitable child seat yourself and to register your toddler’s participation in your reserved excursion directly with the shore excursion staff on board on the day of arrival

Are there requirements for participating in shore excursions?

Accepted Answer

You should not take part in excursions that involve operating bicycles, vehicles, or boats, or in horseback riding, canopy, or canyoning excursions if you have consumed alcohol, are taking medication that may impair your reaction time, suffer from epilepsy or similar conditions, or have any other health issues that could pose a risk to yourself and/or other participants. Please understand that in some cases it may be necessary to sign a liability waiver to participate. This can be reviewed at the shore excursion desk prior to the excursion. Please also note that any applicable cancellation deadlines remain unaffected.

What is the procedure for shore excursions?

Your safety and the smooth operation of shore excursions are of utmost importance not only to us but also to the local operators. For this reason, in the case of arranged excursions, the local operators as your contractual partners reserve the right to change or replace program items and schedules without prior notice. Tours may differ from the itinerary described if unexpected heavy traffic or seasonal factors make this necessary. The order of sightseeing points may also vary. Interior visits may be canceled due to unforeseen events. If unexpected circumstances affect the safety, feasibility, or quality of an excursion, it may be canceled at short notice. Shore excursions are conducted partly by local operators and partly by TUI Cruises. German standards may not be available at all ports of call, and transportation is often typical of the destination. In some countries, there may not be enough German-speaking guides available, so excursions may be conducted in English. Combined excursions:  If you would like to combine excursions, please check with the excursion experts on board in advance to see whether this is feasible in terms of timing. This also applies to excursions reserved online in advance. Catering on shore excursions:  If your booked excursion includes meals, please inform customer service or your onboard excursion experts of any food intolerances or special dietary requirements up to three days before the excursion. Otherwise, tailored catering cannot be guaranteed.

Question 12

Can I organize a private shore excursion?

In some destinations it is possible to book a private car, with a private tour guide if desired. You can also find these in the My Cruise account or the Mein Schiff ® app under the respective port. In addition, in some European ports it is possible to explore independently using our bicycles or e-bikes. This offering depends on country- and port-specific regulations and can be booked—subject to availability—on the evening before the respective port day. Reservations in advance are not possible.

What should I pack for shore excursions?

Unless specific clothing recommendations are included in the excursion description, we recommend wearing practical clothing and comfortable footwear. You should also bring a jacket or sweater, as buses and buildings are usually air-conditioned. For shore excursions such as city tours, hikes, or (water) sports activities, sturdy (non-slip) sneakers will always provide a secure footing. In addition to comfortable clothing for your stay on board, we would like to give you a few general recommendations for shore excursions: Whether travelling north or south, a small backpack or bag for water and small personal items should go with you. A pocket umbrella for sudden changes in the weather, even in supposedly tropical areas. Sturdy, comfortable and non-slip footwear. A scarf or light jacket for buses with good air conditioning. For temples and churches, clothing that covers the knees and shoulders is obligatory. In mosques, it is usually required to wear clothing that covers the arms and legs down to the ankles. Many temples may only be entered without shoes. Socks help against hot plasters.

How should I behave during a shore excursion?

You must follow the instructions of the tour guides and, where applicable, the service staff during shore excursions, especially when bicycles, vehicles, boats, horses, or similar equipment are rented. The rules of conduct explained during the briefing, as well as local traffic regulations, are binding. Some shore excursions involve physical exertion. Due to sometimes unfamiliar climates, your body may react differently to physical activity than it does at home and may tire more quickly. Make sure to drink enough fluids and ensure adequate sun protection. To prevent illness, we recommend avoiding drinking tap water, using ice cubes, eating unpeeled fruit, or consuming undercooked food. Further health information can be found in the price section of the TUI Cruises catalog. The import and export of certain souvenirs, such as corals, shells, and other protected animal and plant products, is prohibited.  Please also ensure that you do not leave any waste behind during your shore excursion. To protect wildlife, always keep a safe distance and do not feed the animals.

Are excursions always conducted in German?

German is spoken by only a limited number of qualified tour guides in many destinations and is not always learned perfectly. Excursions are carried out by local operators who always strive to provide as many German-speaking guides as possible. However, local shore excursion operators reserve the right to conduct excursions in English when necessary. Please also note that the standard of restaurants, buses, and restrooms may not always meet European expectations. The bicycle, e-bike, and e-scooter excursions organized by TUI Cruises, as well as golf and diving excursions, are always accompanied by a German-speaking activity excursion expert.

Question 16

Limited mobility or wheelchair users

Accepted Answer

We want to offer the widest possible variety of excursions to all guests. Unfortunately, some excursions are not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with walking difficulties. Excursions marked with an “extra light” symbol are suitable for guests with a foldable wheelchair (see difficulty levels). Please arrange suitable personal assistance in advance, as help cannot be guaranteed on board. Participants must be able to get in and out of the bus via a few steps independently or with the help of a companion. Detailed information about walking distances or steps is available from the excursion experts on board.

We want all guests, including those with disabilities, to experience as many program highlights as possible. Unfortunately, technical limitations apply. Guests who rely on a wheelchair cannot disembark in tender ports due to increased risk of injury. Thank you for your understanding.

For each excursion arranged by TUI Cruises, the respective local agency is the operator and thus the liable contractual partner. The type and extent of insurance comply with local laws and can vary significantly. Before selecting a local operator, we carefully check that high-quality insurance coverage is in place for the offered shore excursions. For all bicycle, e-bike, and e-scooter excursions, as well as some of the golf excursions, TUI Cruises is the tour operator. Rich in contrasts, religious and deeply rooted in tradition - this is the best way to describe Asia. You have chosen a holiday destination that impresses with its diversity, ranging from bustling metropolises to idyllic island worlds. You can look forward to exotic destinations, fascinating cultures, and exciting experiences. You will have the opportunity to discover all of this in greater detail during the shore excursions. Different countries, different customs To ensure that you can fully enjoy your shore excursion, we would like to provide you with some important information in advance. When visiting temples, shrines, and other religious sites, please choose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees and is not see-through. In many temples and private homes, shoes are left on the threshold - a pair of socks is suitable for this. Please do not turn your back to the Buddha for a souvenir photo and keep a respectful distance from the statues. For a souvenir photo in religious sites, please do not turn your back on the Buddha and maintain a respectful distance from the statues.  Silence is generally observed in temples. Please avoid pointing at other people with your finger. Touching the head—especially of children—is considered taboo, as it is traditionally believed that the soul resides there. If you feel you have received good service, rickshaw and trishaw drivers will appreciate a small tip.  This is not included in the excursion price. What language is spoken here?  Since German-speaking tour guides are only available to a limited extent in Asia, a large number of the excursions arranged by TUI Cruises are conducted in English. Where possible, you will be accompanied by a German-speaking Mein Schiff® shore excursion staff member who will summarize and translate the most important information from the tour guide into German. Please note that the tour guides’ language proficiency may vary and that some may speak English that is difficult to understand. Also be aware that the amount and depth of information and explanations can vary greatly depending on the guide. Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children in Asia Crimes against children are unfortunately widespread in Asia, especially in Thailand. Especially in the tourism sector, the exploitation of children occurs again and again. Therefore, we would like to ask you to inform the tour guide or police if you suspect child exploitation. We also recommend that you avoid places and bars where tourists come into contact with children. Hot stuff - the weather in Asia The climate in Southeast Asia is characterised by almost constant high humidity and high to very high temperatures - depending on the season. There can be monsoon-like downpours in between - it is therefore always advisable to have suitable clothing with you. An umbrella is always a suitable travel companion and provides protection from both rain and strong sunlight. Essential items for your luggage include sunscreen with an appropriate SPF, insect repellent, and headwear. If you plan to stay active during your holiday, sturdy clothing and solid footwear should be part of your standard equipment. Also, please remember to bring enough drinking water on every excursion. Sustainable protection of animals and the environment The European understanding of animal welfare is not applied in all countries of the world, especially in Asia. Elephant rides and animal shows are often offered in different variations. TUI Cruises does not support this in any way and does not offer you excursions with this content. For the sake and protection of the animals, we would ask you not to take part in any of these shows and recommend that you refrain from riding elephants. Roads and infrastructure in some areas do not meet European standards, and not all port cities appear inviting at first glance. In addition, there is often a lack of awareness regarding environmental protection. Plastic bags, disposable packaging, and other plastic products are frequently discarded carelessly and often end up in rivers, on beaches, or along roadsides.

Bathing safety We would like to point out that swimming in the sea at some beaches may be prohibited at times due to current conditions and the occasional presence of jellyfish. For your own safety, please observe the warnings on site. The red flag or a corresponding prohibition sign indicates a strict bathing prohibition.

Despite the proximity of Great Britain and Ireland to German-speaking countries, there are not enough German-speaking tour guides available in many destinations. In this case, excursions are conducted in English. Whenever possible, excursions conducted in English are accompanied by a German-speaking Mein Schiff® excursion expert who translates the tour guide's most important information into German for German-speaking guests.
 
For those non-native speakers who enjoy the English language and would like to receive information about the country and its people in English, there is usually at least one excursion in English for non-native English speakers. These excursions are led by an English-speaking local tour guide - translations into German are deliberately omitted. In the major cities, especially London, there is sometimes heavy traffic. Therefore, please be prepared for traffic delays.

As with many other travel destinations, the same applies here: different countries, different customs. We have compiled the most important tips for this cruise region for you below: Visiting religious sites La Réunion, the Seychelles, and Mauritius have a wide variety of religions and places of worship due to their Creole influence. Therefore, please pay particular attention to appropriate clothing when visiting temples: Choose clothing that covers your shoulders Knees should also be covered In some temples and private homes, shoes must be removed before entering—bringing a pair of socks is recommended Maldives The Maldives consist of numerous flat coral atolls and are predominantly a Muslim country. Please respect local customs, especially outside the resort islands. On inhabited islands, appropriate clothing is required: shoulders and knees should be covered, and swimwear is only permitted on designated beaches or within resorts. Alcohol consumption is only allowed in tourist facilities. Please note that buses cannot always stop directly at sightseeing spots, so short walks may be required. A light jacket is recommended, as air conditioning is often set quite cold. Please do not expect certified tour guides in the Caribbean, similar to those you may have experienced from cruises to other regions with Mein Schiff®. In this region, you will meet local people who will give you an authentic account of the country and its people. Often the tours here are led by the bus drivers, so-called driver guides. Here the bus driver has a double function and is your tour guide at the same time. In the Caribbean, tips to the tour guides are customary and welcome.

Buses The buses on many Caribbean islands do not meet European standards. Sometimes they are minibuses or school buses. Of course, all bus operators working with local tour operators are regularly checked. This way you can be sure that only flawless vehicles are used. Please understand that the buses cannot always park directly in front of the sights and a short walk may be required. A light jacket is also recommended, as the air conditioning is often very cold.

Infrastructure The roads are mostly not up to European standards – you should expect winding roads and potholes. Not all harbour towns look inviting at first glance and many important sights are not located near the harbour, so it is particularly worthwhile to discover the surrounding countryside as part of organised excursions.

Long, comfortable trousers are also recommended for all active tours. And for the water or beach excursions, beach shoes are an advantage.

On boat and snorkelling trips, a life jacket often has to be worn – also for insurance reasons on the part of the local tour operators. Generally, jellyfish that sting are present in the waters. Due to the changing weather conditions, it can happen that, for example, the engine is started for support due to insufficient wind strength on the sailing trips. The local tour operators require the signing of a liability waiver for participation in many shore excursions directly before the excursion begins. These so-called waivers can be viewed at the shore excursion department before participating in the excursion. Guests with reduced mobility Please note that the arranged shore excursions in most ports are carried out in small minibuses, which often do not have the necessary storage space for foldable wheelchairs, rollators or prams (baby buggies). Please ask the shore excursion staff on board for advice.

Private excursions The popular excursions in the minivan are not offered in the Caribbean. If you would like to explore the islands on your own, you can find taxis in the port area. Please understand that TUI Cruises is neither liable for these private excursions nor guarantees their quality. Please do not forget to check the duration of the excursion so that you are back at the ship on time, and discuss the route as well as the price of your tour (usually in US dollars) with the driver beforehand. With the shore excursions arranged by TUI Cruises, which are carried out by the local tour operators, you are insured to the high TUI Cruises standard, have booked the excursion at a fixed price and will be back in port on time.

Security Please note that theft and petty crime can occur in busy places such as shopping streets, markets and historical sites. It is advisable to leave visible jewellery and your valuables in the safe on board. Get together with friends or fellow travellers and don't stroll through the city alone. The wearing of camouflage clothing (camouflage print, military printed clothing) is not permitted in Barbados. And unfortunately, a large part of the population is hostile towards homosexuals. Unlike in Europe, the tours focus less on facts, such as dates or historical events, and more on the interesting stories of the locals or the beauty of the flora and fauna. Please do not expect certified tour guides in the Central America similar to those you may have experienced from cruises to other regions with Mein Schiff®. In this region, you will meet local people who will give you an authentic account of the country and its people. Often the tours here are led by the bus drivers, so-called driver guides. Here the bus driver has a double function and is your tour guide at the same time. In Central America, tips to the tour guides are customary and welcome.

Buses The buses in the individual destinations do not meet the European standard. Sometimes these are minibuses for a maximum of 20 people or school buses. Of course, all bus operators working with local tour operators are regularly checked. This way you can be sure that only flawless vehicles are used. Please understand that the buses cannot always park directly in front of the sights and a short walk may be required. Furthermore, a light coat is recommended as the air-conditioning is often set very cold. Infrastructure The roads are mostly not up to European standards - you have to reckon with a number of hairpin bends and potholes. Not all harbour towns look inviting at first glance and many important sights are not located near the harbour, so it is particularly worthwhile to discover the surrounding countryside as part of organised excursions. Please note that especially in Puerto Limón and Colón, it is recommended to join an organised excursion by one of our local shore tour operators. The port cities are rather restrained in terms of place of interest. On the other hand, they are the ideal starting point for exciting excursions into the dreamlike interior of Costa Rica and Panama.

Beach Some destinations are of volcanic origin. There is a natural beach here, which is darker than one might expect in this region. Beach shoes are recommended on all beaches, as corals can be found close to the beach. Unpredictable strong currents are also to be expected on some beaches and reefs, which could affect the excursion programme. For your own safety, please observe the warnings on site. As a result of current climatic conditions, seaweed is increasingly washing up on the beaches of Mexico (Cozumel and Costa Maya). The seaweed is harmless to your health. Please do not take any food off the boat in Mexico. This is strictly prohibited by the local authorities and may be controlled.

But not only snowfall can bring the transport network to a standstill, other weather-related and country-specific challenges are also possible causes. Clothing In Islamic countries there is a special dress code. Men should wear at least knee-covering trousers. Women should not wear revealing clothes in public. Short skirts, belly-baring tops or strappy tops as well as skimpy shorts and very body-hugging clothing can offend the religious and moral sensibilities of the locals. Topless bathing is even prohibited by law.

Water shortage in the Cape region You will no doubt have read in the media in recent years that the Cape region was affected by an acute water shortage. Numerous measures to reduce daily water consumption, stricter restrictions and a relatively rainy winter mean that the all-clear has been given. To support this, we also want to encourage people to use water consciously and sparingly, for example when washing their hands in restaurants.  Fascinating animal world When travelling to southern Africa, everyone dreams of seeing the Big Five in the wild: Elephants, rhinos, buffalo, lions and leopards. To experience this within a few hours during a safari, you still need a bit of luck. Although the experienced rangers know their animal neighbours very well and will do everything they can to show you as many of them as possible, the sighting of wild animals can never be guaranteed. In order to lure the sometimes shy wild animals out of their camouflage, there are a few rules to follow. You should avoid talking loudly during the safari, mobile phones may only be used for taking photos and standing up is also prohibited so as not to frighten the animals. What are pedelecs?

Cycling with an extra energy boost: The pedelec is an electrically powered bicycle that assists the rider up to a speed of 25 km/h when pedalling. The desired intensity of the pedal assistance can be set at various levels. From a speed of 25 km/h, the electric motor is automatically switched off and the bike can only be accelerated using muscle power. Thanks to the motor assistance, longer distances can be covered and some inclines can be tackled more easily. No special knowledge is required to operate a pedelec. Anyone who can ride a normal bike can also ride a pedelec. Pedelecs do not require a special licence for road traffic.

Which pedals are fitted to the bikes?

Our bicycles have normal pedals as standard, which can be ridden with normal shoes. On request, we can fit Shimano system pedals (SPD pedals), but only on the Bike Active Tour. You are welcome to bring your cycling shoes on board. Make sure that you can walk well on them. The use of SPD pedals is limited to selected and suitable adventure rides on a normal mountain bike. On the other bike and e-bike tours, only standard pedals are used to ensure the comfort and safety of all participants. Children under the age of 16 may only take part in the bicycle and e-bike excursions if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Young people aged 16 and over may also take part in the bicycle and e-bike excursions alone with a signed declaration of consent from a parent or guardian. However, for insurance reasons, neither special children's bikes nor child seats are available.  In principle, your child must be tall enough (at least 150 cm) and physically able to operate one of our bikes. The decision on this is at the discretion of the active excursion experts. However, there is no children's price.

Do bicycle and e-bike excursions take place in all weathers?

There's no such thing as bad weather here, just the wrong clothes. Therefore, please remember to adapt your clothing to the weather conditions and take rainwear and, if necessary, a change of clothes with you on your excursion. If the safety of the participants is at risk due to weather conditions, the excursion will be cancelled by the Shore Activities Manager and cancelled partially or completely free of charge.

In some European harbours it is possible to travel individually with our bikes or e-bikes. The offer depends on country and port specifications and can be booked on the evening before the respective port day, subject to availability. Advance booking is not possible.

For reasons of space and safety, passengers are not permitted to bring their own bikes, with the exception of folding bikes, which can be stowed well packed in their own cabin. TUI Cruises accepts no responsibility for this.
