Plastic Reduction Program
We want to help to protect our oceans.
As a first step, we identified all plastic and single-use products on board. In the second step, we began exploring alternative solutions. In doing so, we are also reviewing our supply chains, the products of our partners and suppliers, and our transport packaging.
At Mein Schiff® Fleet, we see it as our responsibility to contribute to the protection of the oceans and beaches. For this reason, we launched a plastic reduction program in 2018.
Our objectives:
Avoiding plastics and single-use articles as far as possible
Where possible, replace plastic with materials made from renewable resources, such as washable cotton aprons and laundry bags
Optimize the reuse of unavoidable plastic and single-use products, e.g., by sending them to onshore recycling facilities
Putting every product to the test
As a first step, we logged all plastic and non-recyclable materials on board. In the second step we originated alternative solutions. In this effort we also examine our supply chains, partners´ and suppliers´ products, and transportation packaging.
Every effective idea is then considered for implementation and our crews are committed to supporting us throughout the process. For instance, the solution of hanging daily newspapers to cabin door handles with a hemp cord instead of in a plastic bag originated from a crew member. So what have we achieved thus far? Fleet-wide, 34 million plastic items and other non-recyclables have already been eliminated annually since the program was launched in 2018.
Our measures
- Washable cotton aprons
Numerous examples demonstrate the impact of our WASTELESS initiative. To minimize non-disposable plastics, our chefs´ aprons are now made of reusable cotton, not synthetic materials.
- Refillable soap dispensers
Our guests will find refillable soap dispensers in the bathrooms, which help us reduce plastic waste. Our shampoos and body washes are also free of microplastics.
- Cotton laundry bags
Plastic laundry bags? Not on a TUI cruise! We did our research and opted for washable, reusable cotton laundry bags.
- Twice the protection
When the heavens open, our reusable rain ponchos keep our guests dry and the environment happy.
- Sustainably packaged vanity sets
We keep our packaging plastic-free, replacing it with FSC-certified paper.
- Enjoyment on a Grand Scale
This Nutella maxi-dispenser is bursting with sweet flavor – and replaces a whole box of individually packed portions.
