What makes Original Beans special
Original Beans promotes peer-based cooperation between the farmers in the cocoa-growing regions, chocolate consumers, and Mother Nature. This initiative uses rare cocoa varieties to make its high-quality products – and protects these crops at the same time.
The cocoa farmers live in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa and Ecuador in South America. They receive focused training, agricultural equipment and fair prices for their rare beans.
Chocolate lovers on board our cruise ships can look forward to top-quality products that require just a few ingredients. And word has already spread, with Original Beans garnering multiple food and chocolate awards for its innovations.

One4One Trees
Thanks to the ONE4ONE project, Mother Nature can breathe a sigh of relief: For every bar of chocolate sold, Original Beans plants a cocoa tree in a rainforest. The program has been running since 2010 and ensures that the natural habitat for cocoa plants, trees and wildlife is preserved. In the end, this is vital for all of us because these forests bind atmospheric CO2.

Fair +Cocoa prices depend on global market prices and are thus extremely volatile. The same applies to fair trade prices, which are higher than global prices but not subject to the same fierce fluctuations. The Cocoa Barometer, established in 2018 along with the World Cocoa Conference, makes it clear that the sharp price fall in the 2016/17 season further worsened cocoa farmers´ already critical situation. On the Ivory Coast, where most of the world´s cocoa is cultivated, farmers only receive around 1/3 of what Fairtrade International sees as a subsistence wage!
Through direct trade with farmers and paying prices some 1/3 above global market levels, Original Beans consistently ensures a decent and stable income for cocoa cultivators.
Napos Virunga chocolate (70%)The cocoa for this chocolate is grown in Africa´s oldest National Park, Virunga in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo – a park famous for its sheer variety of species. This natural beauty is under threat, however, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Endangered List.
Cultivating sustainable cocoa is a good opportunity for the local population to benefit from their land and protect it at the same time. Original Beans has helped drive this development for over a decade now, which has encouraged thousands of smallholder farmers to cultivate certified organic cocoa. This has tripled farmers´ income and reduced deforestation rates by 50%.
Esmeraldas chocolate (42%)The coastal rainforest in Ecuador, South America, has had a tough time in recent decades. It has all been cut down, apart from a few clumps of woodland. Part of what has survived is now the Mache Chindul Ecological Reserve.
Cocoa farmers in Mono Bravo represent the cultivation base of Esmeralda chocolate and see themselves as guardians of the forest and its fauna. Original Beans supports the smallholder farmers and ensures they receive decent wages for the cocoa they grow.
