This idyllic natural port has offered seafarers protection, safety and hospitality for over 2,000 years. Your ship slowly sails in here through the southernmost fjord in Europe. Enjoy the sight of the rugged rock faces and immerse yourself in the city’s eventful past. The sheltered bay was a hideout for pirates and buccaneers, but also a trading centre and naval base – and thus much sought after by the occupying forces: You can discover Roman and Byzantine traces, and the Venetians also ruled here for 300 years. Other occupiers include the Austrians, Russians and even Napoleon’s troops. In the city itself, the approx. 4.5 km long city wall bears witness to these troubled times. Behind it, the medieval old town still welcomes you with venerable Romanesque churches, the classic Renaissance clock tower and some magnificent Venetian palaces. Marvel at this diversity and relax with a glass of red wine in one of the quaint cafés.
