In the southern Mediterranean Sea is Crete – the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. Its lively capital, Heraklion, was named after Hercules, who, according to legend, rid the island of a beast as one of his 12 heroic deeds. The island, which impresses with over 300 days of sunshine a year, attracts visitors with enchanting beaches, charming towns and many significant archaeological sites.
