Port Said
The Egyptian harbour town of Port Said is located on a headland that juts out into the sea. The main attraction of this city is the approximately 163 kilometre long Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea and is one of the most important shortcuts for ships worldwide. Spectators are treated to a fascinating sight as gigantic ships wind their way through the northern entrance to the passage. A monument still commemorates the builder of the Suez Canal, Ferdinand de Lesseps. The city’s most famous building is also closely linked to the Suez Canal: The green domes of the administration building shine out at visitors from afar. Not far from this striking building, you can go shopping in the city centre or sample local delicacies.
