Livorno suffered much wartime destruction in the past but the Florentine Medici family rebuilt its walls and it now boasts one of Italy’s most important ports. Today, Tuscany’s second largest town is more than an idyllic fishing village and knows how to delight its visitors with beautiful waterfront promenades, such as Viale Italia, lined with art nouveau houses, or the Venezia Nuova merchants’ quarter.
